A charity performance of Antigone set to be performed yesterday to raise €50,000 for firefighters & victims of Greece's tragic fires has been cancelled by the government. The classic Greek play written by Sophocles, tells the story of a young woman named Antigone whose wish to give her brother a decent burial is denied by the king. It's an analysis of vanity & power versus morality & ethics a theme which seems to have hit a raw nerve with Greece's government who had the play shut down two hours before performance. A stunned audience watched as the stage was removed & actors escorted away.

Composer Stamatis Kraounakis wrote: "We decided today's Antigone program in Nea Makri to give all profits to the people there. However, Mayor Ilias Psinakis interrupted the performance …his reason, Because of grief he said … but his fear noticed us … So for the burnt offerings in Nea Makri we must now cancel. I searched Psinakis on the phone - did not come … I'm afraid at the moment, our techniques are drowning. There is no greater cliff than human stupidity.
