Cell phones have proved invaluable to young Masai men when herding cows at night as they allow them to send messages to each other detailing locations of lions, which need to be avoided as they have become specialist cow hunters. Conflict between lions and the Masai in the region often results in the death of lions - which are poisoned using cheap pesticides. Cell phones are just one way to help avoid conflict but the bigger issues of over grazing and human encroachment in the region persist.
