From @nytmag | Shark Bay, an 8,500-square-mile @Unesco #WorldHeritage Site, has the largest sea-grass meadows in the world. These subtropical forests are home to thousands of large sharks, fish, sea turtles, bottlenose dolphins and #dugongs. In 2011, during an extreme, prolonged heat wave, shallow waters in the bay reached 93°F, the hottest temperature ever recorded there. An estimated 22% of the sea grass disappeared. “The water was 4°C warmer than usual for that time of year — everything cooked,” said Elizabeth Sinclair, a senior research fellow at @universitywa. “The sea grass is like a rain forest. They provide the habitat and food for a lot of species.” The 8,000-year-old meadows also stored carbon dioxide; when they died, they released up to the equivalent of what 2 coal-fired power plants or 1.6 million cars emit each year. @geosteinmetz took this #aerialphoto of #SharkBay while on assignment for @nytmag in April 2018.
