A little Bluesday inspiration from #BKMAfricanart: Producing a single ukara cloth is a collaborative effort involving multiple Igbo artists. Male artists sketch out the grid and draw designs in nsibidi (a graphic communication system), then another man stitches the plan onto the fabric using raffia fiber. Women then dye the fabric with indigo before children of any gender cut away the raffia stitches, revealing the final design in blue and white. Finished ukara products are most often used by the men’s society called Ekpe, but can also be sold in the market. This cloth in particular was purchased for the Museum at a market in Aba, Nigeria in 1990. #infinitebluebkm ?
