By modern standards this doesn’t look like a #toolwatch, but 80 years ago, that’s exactly what this was. The #pam232 is a faithful-ish interpretation of the ref. 3646 made for Panerai by Rolex, the first watch to be delivered to the Italian Navy Divers for use in underwater missions. At the time, a water-resistant case, screw down crown, and sandwich-dial filled with radioactive luminous material was cutting-edge technology. The original 3646’s differ from this 232 in that they had the wire lugs welded to the case, domed plastic crystals and thicker casebacks. Oh, and the 232 isn’t radioactive! ? The straps were straight 26mm with a big, flat, knife-edge buckle. It was designed purely to function as a highly legible, sub-aquatic time keeper..... but I think it’s really pretty too. ?
