"I started the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign because I was a very avid reader, and I think I was encouraged to read more because I always saw myself and I always saw black girls as the main characters. But that was only in the books that I read at home—when I got to school, I didn't have access to stories that showed this position of black girls being the main characters of our own lives, and leading our stories.
