These are the steps leading up to the place which held so much of my happiness and the best memories from my childhood. These steps where were we played kick the can and fireworks were watched from. The place we ran to and hugged hello and tearfully embraced goodbye. The home my grandfather built and where my mother was raised. Where imagination ran free among the corn fields and dressing up never ended. This is also the place which held the toxic gas which was the cause of my grandmother’s lung cancer… RADON.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the primary cause for non smokers… sadly most of us aren’t educated about it. For us to know it doesn’t have to be a cause of cancer because it can be mitigated from a home and no longer a risk is important. So here’s some facts Radon is:
1. Main cause of the number one cancer killer, lung cancer, for non-smoker
2. Colorless, Flavorless and Odorless but can be tested for in your home, workplace or schools
3. It’s the breaking down of uranium which releases this gas
4. Prolonged exposure leads to lung cancer
5. There are short-term test kits which can be purchased and also professional companies who can come test the levels of radon as well
6. Radon levels depend on the area you live in. Some are at high risk some are not.
Most importantly, educate yourself. Lung cancer is the NUMBER ONE CANCER KILLER. And for those of us who think because we don’t smoke or aren’t around smokers this doesn’t apply to us, think again. We must know risks and causes and this one can be eradicated! Together we are a force for change but educating is a huge part of this process!
