Photo by @michaelmelford –One of the many beautiful dunes along the one road leading into Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. Also known as Sossusviei which really refers to the salt and clay pan, not the sand dunes. The high concentration of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes creates the red colors of these dunes, which appear even more intense as the rising sun shines on them. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish color. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 650 ft. the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 1,066 ft high and many people like to climb.
