Exactly 20 years separates Rohingya refugees Mohammed Yunus, 28 (centre) and Mohammed Anas, 8 (right), yet their lives bear a remarkable similarity. Mohammed’s son Yusuf is also 8 (left). Mohammed Yunus fled from Myanmar by boat across the Naf river to the camps in the far south-east of Bangladesh in August 1998. Mohammed Anas made the same journey from the same area in August 2017. Both adult and child say they left for the same reasons – the army killed many of their friends and family, destroyed their villages and forced them out of their homes at gunpoint. Mohammed Yunus made the river crossing with 24 people including many family members on board a boat, while Mohammed Anas – part of the exodus of about 700,000 people at the end of last year – made a similar crossing with 40 people on board including members of his family. While Mohammed Yunus, a shrimp farmer, says he hopes to return to Myanmar, Mohammed Anas is more circumspect. “It will only happen if Allah wills it,” he says. @unicefbangladesh is on the ground helping to deliver life-saving supplies and services for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. With partners, we have helped the government immunize 900,000 children and adults against cholera, and screened nearly 263,000 children for malnutrition. Yet one year on, much more needs to be done. Despite the immense efforts undertaken by the international community and governments, the futures of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya children and their families remain in the balance. We’re calling for coordinated action by the Governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh, with the active support of the international community. Photo: @patrickbrownphoto
