#Emilia written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm at @the_globe. I had to sleep on this in order to think about what I really wanted to say as there is so much. This is the first time I had seen an all female cast specifically on Shakespeare’s stage... a stage that would traditionally not welcome them. This was not lost on me. To see 3 black women leading that play.... that was not lost on me. As a woman with black heritage it spoke to me on another level. Leah Harvey, Vinette Robinson and Clare Perkins... your performances balled me over. I felt every word. This all goes to show how far we have come, but what resonated with me the most is the fact that the treatment of women in this play... set in this era... is still so very current. This play addressed the silencing of women... the violence towards women from men. The abuse of power. It was for women by women. It was for men too if they wanted to listen. This play did not sugar coat a thing... It was pretty unforgiving, incredibly moving and heartbreaking while having great humour. But more than anything... empowering. The effect on the audience was immediate. Women wiping away tears, women energised but unable to quite articulate it... physically shaking. My trip to the ladies room afterwards was like no other ever in my life ??? The play reminded the women watching that your anger, your frustrations, maybe even your fear... are justified as the world reminds us daily that it’s warranted. But are also tools and driving force to provoke change for ALL your sisters. Your sisters from a different race, a different class, a different religion, our LGBTQ women, women with disability... stand together... hear each other... use the privilege you DO yield to support women with less privilege than you do. And to the men who were there... it was a call to you to try to understand, to listen to the women in your life, to address and use your privilege as a man to support them and all women. Today is the last performance if you can get there, GO. I hope this play gets a second, longer run. It’s an important one. #EmiliaBassano #poet #mother #feminist #TheGlobe #Emilia #empoweringwomen #tobebornawomanistobebornstrong #inclusion
