This retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler will bring together a wide range of important paintings from every phase of the oeuvre of this legendary artist, reflecting the multiple ambiguities in the staging of his remarkable images. His pictures combine tranquility with extreme tension, and embody a wealth of contradictions, mingling dream and reality, eroticism and innocence, the soberly factual and the deeply enigmatic, the familiar and the uncanny, in a wholly unique way.
