What do you wear to work? Shirtwaists like this one became popular with working class women in the 1890s, because they were easier to move in and cleaner than a full dress.
Not only did women wear these to work, many women worked creating shirtwaists like these in the garment industry. While wearing a shirtwaist may have made life easier for some women, creating shirtwaists was not easy in the 1900s garment industry.
Garment worker Clara Lemlich told the New York Evening Journal “The shops are unsanitary—that’s the word that is generally used, but there ought to be a worse one used. . . . At the beginning of every slow season, $2 is deducted from our salaries. We have never been able to find out what this is for.” Workers like Lemlich organized unions and strikes to demand better conditions. Tragic fires like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire also captured the public attention and help lead to change.
