#SpeakingInDance | “I started thinking that there was a lack of nuance about how people talk about being black or being queer,” said the choreographer @raja_the_feath3r_theory_. “I like to think about craft and feelings that don’t have to do with my trauma or my pain.” In response, he’s created “Black Queer Zoo,” the first section of “Raja Feather Kelly’s UGLY,” at @bushwickstarr, September 5 to 8. In this section, set to music by Emily Auciello, he imagines himself as a “yellow glamour alien,” and moves while interpreting the words of an essay he wrote. When he counts to 7, that’s the number of hornets about to attack him. “It’s a yellow room, and people are sitting in black chairs,” he said, with a laugh. Yes, we — the audience — are hornets. For him, using yellow, his favorite color, is an attempt to create a neutral space that is neither white nor black. “I remember reading an #AnneSexton poem that has the line ‘Far off, in the field, something yellow grows,’ ” he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “It made me understand something about hope. When I see yellow, I see depth.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance. | On Wednesday, @raja_the_feath3r_theory_ presents another work, “Movement for the Red Shoes,” performed by @rpritzlaff, as part of @dancenownyc at @joespub.
