Introducing FW18: Heidi pulls from her personal journey with nature and its delicate balance for the Autumn / Winter 2018 collection. Having endured the Thomas fire threatening her hometown and eventually burning 50 acres of her 55 acre apple farm, Heidi re-envisioned the mood and palette of the collection. When she was able to return to her land to see the desolation, Heidi was overwhelmed by the amazing way people, when survived by tragedy, are gifted with an innate ability to remain grateful and simply put, themselves. As she moved through the landscape, the extreme blackness of the burnt tree trunks was indescribable, and the only way to see the tree for what it was, was to have known what was there before. This inspired what she is calling her ASH print. She wanted to dye a fabric with a blackness that made the texture and print only visible to the wearer. This worked so well she added a FIRE inspired color. And when, towards the end of completing the collection, the mudslides came to Montecito, Heidi knew she had to refer to them in this context and thus became the last of the cotton striped fabrics in our sable color. The silhouettes have a playfulness and, in keeping with the integrity of the collection, represent the best of what the Heidi Merrick brand has become. The purpose is to say, among great tragedy and times of trial, our selves, our ballast, remains the same - we are changed only by the hues or colors of our times...
