Good morning and happy Sunday everyone! And you probably know by now, every Sunday I donate my social media to my @yearsofliving team so you guys can get involved with our #PutAPriceOnIt campaign. Today’s post comes from one of our Fall Fellows, Patrick, a student at Tufts University. “I’m an economics student, and if economists believe anything, they believe that people react to incentives. We need to use this wisdom to stop climate change, and encourage people to step away from business as usual or catastrophic consequences will follow. Not asteroids. Not volcanos. Without incentives, human beings may destroy their own home.

But imagine a world in which we put a price on carbon? This additional cost for carbon will be the perfect incentive. Fossil fuels will become more expensive than their green counterparts. People will start to change their lifestyle, consume less fossil fuels, and reduce their carbon footprint. The fossil fuels industry will feel the pressure and abate their carbon emissions. The environment and the atmosphere, rather than a victim of tragedy of the commons, will be a symbol of responsibility. Where do you think the revenue goes? All the carbon pricing mechanisms proposed include some kind of rebate. Which means that people will end up with more money in their hands. That’s a world I want to live in.
