When @RaqibShaw’s rug design is finished, it will consist of nearly a million knots. Woven with silk to achieve a jewel-like shimmer, it will reflect Shaw’s opulent painting style. The rug design is so intricate that only one skilled weaver was considered capable of completing the task. Here, a small sample of the rug is placed atop the ‘cartoon’ graph, hand-drawn for the weaver to follow.

Shaw’s finished design will be unveiled at Sotheby’s London in January alongside 10 further rugs designed by contemporary artists, which have been inspired by antique Tibetan ‘tiger rugs’ – traditionally used by monks in prayer. They will be sold in aid of #Tx2, @WWF’s initiative to double the number of tigers in the wild by the next Chinese #YearoftheTiger (2022)
