Brad Pitt built dozens of homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina through his Make It Right Foundation. The charity’s mission was to build 150 well-designed, green, affordable houses in the hard-hit Lower 9th Ward. But 10 years later, residents say the homes are rotting and dangerous — and now they’re suing.
.
The Allen family’s home hasn’t fared well. Wood is rotting and an inspector reported mold and improper ventilation, which the family believes is making them sick. Keith, 63, suffers from near-constant tremors brought on by a mysterious illness. Sharon, 65, has trouble breathing and frequent respiratory infections. Khalid, 20, has been in and out of the hospital for issues including muscle tremors, impaired speech, breathing problems and memory loss. They say doctors have told them to leave the house, but they can’t afford to unless Make It Right buys it back.
.
“The organization does not build safe homes,” Kamaria Allen wrote in a letter to the foundation. “It is a fool’s paradise.” Read more through the link in our profile.
