"Noritaka Tatehana & the Art of Japanese Scents"

KUDAN HOUSE (1-15-9 Kudankita Chiyoda-ku Tokyo) “Noritaka Tatehana and the Art of Japanese Scents” is the sequence to “Rethink”, Tatehana’s biggest solo exhibition held last year at the Omotesando Hills. Tatehana who fuses past and present through re-evaluation of Japanese culture, reviews the cultural attitude towards the fragrances of Japan at “the Art of Japanese Scents”. Among the 20-plus new creations exhibited are Lady Gaga’s heel-less shoes, censor inspired by the Japanese culture of scents, and a group of works composed of Genjikou-no-zu motifs, a geometric design pattern symbolizing the combination of incense fragrances. Also through the images from Tatehana’s own collection of Ukiyo-e prints of oiran, the courtesans from the Edo and Meiji period, and the precious data owned by Shoyeido, a long-established incense company, Tatehana would like the people who visit the exhibition to experience the process of “re-thinking” which means creating something new to him.
