65 years ago this week, the cover of LIFE magazine featured a young girl named Juanita, the daughter of the great photojournalist, W. Eugene Smith. Along with the cover, the Sept. 21, 1953 issue also featured a photo essay - "MY DAUGHTER JUANITA, A perceptive photographer displays the many moods of his 8-year-old." According to LIFE, "Most fathers take pictures of their children out of fondness and their snapshots reveal more love than art. Juanita Smith's father takes pictures of his daughter not just because he is fond of her but because she is a delightful photographic subject."
