The music scene in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) was ever so energetic. The situation was almost the same as in Japan, as young people were listening to the major K-POP music, but the music lovers were listening to the US/UK HIPHOP music. The facts that the indies labels are flourishing, musicians and fans are forming their own communities, and the main parts of the city have been gentrified tell us that Kuala Lumpur is now exactly at where Tokyo was three years ago.
The critical difference between Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur is the language spoken within the music communities. Musicians in Malaysia are speaking English as the domestic music industry has not yet matured. They have begun to look abroad for more opportunities.
