Accepting a change-maker award in the city where I can remember sitting with two hundred women waiting for a casting and later waiting in lobbies for hours, or even overnight, to be fit...what I know for sure is that I am not an anomaly. Women start modeling often because it seems to hold the promise of a voice, of power to change things for our families, and even for our world. The truth is not many get picked for the covers and opening looks (most industry leaders still cast models who are predominantly white/cis-gender/ slender/young/ able bodied/ 5'10"+) BUT the change we can really make is the change we make together. I started organizing fellow models a decade ago, just before the COP in Copenhagen, thinking that we might be able to use our voices to make climate activism mainstream, and remind, especially young women and girls, that no matter who you are, even if you are an "unqualified model" you can have a political voice and opinion and you can assert your power to build the world you want to live in. Now a decade later, I got to share the stage with fashion sustainability champions from around the world. Thank you @liviafirth for your tireless efforts to build this movement in fashion, thank you to the @ecoage team for everything you make possible, to @missbrunello for your kind words last night, to my partner @damanibaker for being my partner in everything, to my agent @x_tran for supporting and encouraging me to take risks. Most of all, thank you to the hundreds who trusted me with their stories last year, ensuring that our collective story would be heard, would shift power, would be company for others who have thought #myjobshouldnotincludeabuse, this award is really for us. #gcfaitalia
