From a Prada store in the middle of the Texan desert, to an apartment block in a former submarine factory in Rotterdam, and to an art fair in Beijing, artists Elmgreen & Dragset have created fictional spaces to interrogate the ways in which people use and are affected by architecture. Their most recent creation is the Whitechapel Pool, occupying the main gallery of @whitechapelgallery and anchoring their new solo show, titled This is how we bite our tongue. The installation comes with an imagined history, in which the pool is founded through philanthropic efforts in 1901 and in its heyday, became a hub for the local community and inspired the early works of David Hockney. Starved by austerity, the pool was abandoned in the Thatcher years, only to be snapped up recently by a developer who intends to turn it into the key feature of a luxury hotel spa. The work speaks to gentrification and the decline of civic duty, say the artists, bur it’s also ‘a sentimental image of painful transitions in general - the shift of values - and how it can be difficult as a human being and as a citizen to adjust to such challenges.’
