There is the story of a samurai who’s overlord was assassinated. The samurai took it upon himself to hunt down the assassin and avenge the death of his master. He searched for a long while and finally tracked down the assassin. The samurai cornered the assassin and drew his sword to cut him down and avenge his overlord. At that moment the assassin spit in the samurais face. The samurai returned his sword to the sheath and walked away leaving the assassin unharmed. .

The samurai did this because if he had cut down the assassin in that moment he would have been doing it out of personal anger as opposed to doing out of duty to his lord. Putting ones feelings aside is a step in the direction toward a mastery of self.
