Big Mac capped his historic 1998 season with another multi-home run performance in the final game of the season. After singling in the first, Mark smashed a solo shot off Expos rookie starter Mike Thurman in the third inning and walked in the fifth. In his last plate appearance of the year, McGwire brought the sold out crowd of 46,110 to their feet one last time as he broke a 3-3 deadlock by connecting for #70 off Carl Pavano in the 7th inning.
With seven hits (5 HR) in his final 11 at-bats, Big Mac ended the season with an incredible slash line of .299/.470/.752 with 147 RBI, 130 runs and 162 walks. In a planned postgame ceremony, McGwire was presented with the “St. Louis Award” by city officials for his outstanding contribution to the metropolitan community.
