Arthur Lee and his band Love were among the most prominent and influential groups of the 1960’s psychedelic music scene. Based in Los Angeles rather than San Francisco, they often crossed paths with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and other icons from San Francisco’s legendary Summer of Love movement. Despite achieving critical acclaim, their diverse group that mixed elements of folk rock, blues, and flamenco never broke into the mainstream and they enjoyed very modest success within their time. However, In later years a variety of critics have described them amongst the most important bands in American music history.
Their 1967 album “Forever Changes” would prove to be their greatest contribution. The album features the most masterful execution of their unique sound, and ranked 40th on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. The cover art matches the music perfectly, featuring an amalgam of faces in bright and vivid color by acclaimed illustrator Bob Pepper, who is known for his work on the cover of many Phillip K. Dick novels as well as the cover of Claude Debussy’s “Greatest Hits.”
