In 2004 I signed a very lucrative contract with a new DeBeers jewelry campaign endeavor and I inquired extensively if this was a right fit for me and everything seemed to be alright.
After my campaign above came out I received several letters from human rights organization Survival International claiming that there was a conflict of ethics. Their claim was that the Bushmen of Botswana were evicted from their ancestral land and the Botswana government were relocating & resettling them for diamonds exploration... De Beers & the Botswana government absolutely denied that there is any connection whatsoever! Then Botswana President Festus Mogae confirmed that there was a policy of relocating the Botswana Bushmen, but there is no connection with diamond exploration! After exploring the issue with the South Africa government, The UN and several independent human rights organizations I couldn’t get to the bottom of it.
I couldn’t with a clear conscience proceed with this venture so I terminated my contract. Sometimes you just have to trust your conscience & listen/follow your basic instinct and take a stance.
