Do you like watching the Sun rise over the water? How about from space? An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (@国際宇宙ステーション) snapped this photo of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as dawn illuminated Lake Superior’s shoreline. Lake Superior is Earth’s largest freshwater lake by surface area.
The subdued, orange sunglint and hazy atmosphere may be due to wildfires that occurred in August 2017 throughout the northwestern United States and parts of Canada. Smoke particles in the atmosphere can cause the scattering of light waves and create pale orange-red hues at dusk or dawn, when Sun elevation is low relative to the local horizon.
This image was taken on Sept. 3, 2017. It has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed.
Astronauts have used hand-held cameras to photograph the Earth for decades. Beginning with the Mercury missions in the early 1960s, astronauts have taken more than 1.5 million photographs of the Earth. Today, the International Space Station continues this tradition of Earth observation from human-tended spacecraft. Astronauts onboard take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public.
