On this date, Bob Gibson threw his 31st complete game of the 1968 season. Making his third career World Series Game Seven start, Gibson was nearly perfect through the first six innings, allowing just one batter to reach base. The Tigers managed three runs off Gibson in the seventh after a two-out line drive sailed over the head of centerfielder Curt Flood to score the first two runs of the game. Cardinals batters couldn’t provide much run support as starting pitcher Mickey Lolich threw his own five-hit complete game to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 win over St. Louis and capture Detroit’s third world championship.
