If you are UK based and can access @bbcone i-player, watch 'Fashions Dirty Secret' with @sjdooley and open your eyes. It explains how Fast Fashion and the fashion industry is rotting our planet and the people on it in ways that we as consumers and business owners don't see or know about. We are one of the biggest polluters on the planet - bigger than transport and beef. Changes to this dire situation will only come from serious and immediate changes in national and international legislation and laws, and sadly according to this programme, this is something which will probably be very slow to happen. Changes in legislation will only come from public pressure and consumer demand; people power and money. This is something everyone reading this post can be part of. Educating ourselves in order to make better and more informed choices as both customers and business owners. Reading the recent publication by the brilliant @fash_rev (an organisation aiming to educate and spread the word about the destructive fashion industry) I wanted to share a handful of useful things from it that are small attempts at problem solving that we can all start doing ourselves today 1 - much pollution comes from how we care for our clothes, for example, our jeans don't need to be washed as much as they are. Denim hates being washed, and you can easily reduce how much you wash them as they prefer to be frozen in the freezer instead, which cleans them in a less damaging way to the planet. 2- avoid buying pre-distressed jeans, the chemicals used in this process are extremely bad for the environment, it is better to wear your jeans and distress them naturally ourselves 3- Wash your clothes less frequently and at 30degrees, small changes in habit in how we care for clothes can make a big difference across the bigger picture. 4- repair your clothes and wear them for longer, *treat them as the precious resource they are, not as waste.* The UK's Environmental Audit Committee has launched an investigation into sustainability in the UK Fashion Industry, which we and several others have submitted evidence too - keep your fingers crossed for changes in UK legislation (cont. in comments below)
