The violent events of 1965-68, including the assassinations of both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., led to Stokely Carmichael’s call for Black Power. Artists too were encouraged to explore new, bold imagery growing out of resistance to oppression. #ElizabethCatlett’s Black Unity fist carved of cedar perfectly captures that revolutionary spirit. ✊? #soulofanationbkm⠀
