Artist William Bouguereau devoted over a third of his work to recording French country life.⠀

This work, like many of Bouguereau’s paintings, was first drawn from life during his summer in La Rochelle, then completed in his studio after he returned to Paris. This two-step process was common for the artist and he fondly called them his ‘vacances’ (holidays).⠀
