These incredible boys. These incredible leaders. These awe-inspiring activists. Last night I was both honored & humbled to hold space for three of the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglass in Parkland, FL. We spoke before an audience of close to 1,000 in Seattle, WA. • These young men are poised, wise, brilliant, & honest. They shine, vulnerably. They don’t hide the struggle. Yet they find moments of humor. The pain does not, for one minute, slow their determined energy. They have a wellspring of purpose. They know that this movement is greater than any one of them. They use their platform to highlight their story, but also the stories of other survivors of, and communities affected by, gun violence who have not had the twisted fortune of capturing national media attention. • They dispel falsehood quickly. Crisis actors? Nope. Just kids who’ve been studying civics & producing their school news for years. So they know how it works & put their education to good use. Too media savvy? No these kids grew up with social media, so of course they know how to clapback and meme. They’re good at it. As for those who claim they’re “anti-gun?” Nope. And they’re firm on this. David said to me last night, “no one who instituted drivers licenses, speed limits, seatbelts, or stoplights was anti-car. They were anti people dying in cars. We aren’t anti-gun. We’re anti people dying who don’t have to, from guns. Safety laws & common sense practices exist for the sole purpose of increasing safety.” Um. Yes!! • Throughout our talk, each of them demystified so many things we’ve been taught, or that we seem to feel, with incredible amounts of research (collected over more than 100 years). These kids have become EXPERTS because they have no other choice. They’ve taken their pain and turned it into action. • Jammal looked at the crowd last night, and distilled it in a perfectly gutting & simultaneously inspiring sentence. “Don’t wait to see your best friend in a casket to get active in your community,” he said. For them, the 17 lost who they wear wristbands for, and the countless lost who someone out there remembers with a symbol as well, we won’t wait. #MarchForOurLives
