“While giving free haircuts to queer homeless youth does not solidify a home for them, it does give them the self-esteem they need to know they deserve a home,” reads @project_q_'s manifesto. Created by @madinraylopez, who has a barbering license, ProjectQ serves LGBTQIA youth by cutting their hair. Lopez, who rejects the binary construct of the English language in favor of allowing individuals to elect their preferred gender pronoun (or PGP), personally uses they instead of he or she, and says that ProjectQ teaches us that “a haircut is more than a haircut.” It is a way of redefining yourself, and taking control of how you see yourself and how the world sees you.
