Former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, was meeting with constituents in front of a Tucson, Ariz., grocery store in 2011 when a gunman opened fire. She was gravely wounded; six others were killed. The next year, 20 children and six adults were murdered in the Sandy Hook school shooting. That incident prompted Giffords, now 48, and her husband Mark Kelly, a 54-year-old Navy veteran and former NASA astronaut, to seek solutions to gun violence. They founded an organization called Giffords and now work with politicians in both parties to advocate for stricter gun laws, including background checks, across the country. "I’m a gun owner, I’m a supporter of the Second Amendment. But we must do better than this," says Kelly. "We’re like no other country in the world on this.” Hear Giffords and Kelly’s full story and explore all 245 voices at TIME.com/guns-in-america
