This is Patricia. She is close to a year old, but is almost as small as a new born. She was born with cleft lips and palate. That’s not a problem for people who can access healthcare, but for kids who don’t have that opportunity a cleft pallet could be fatal since they can’t eat or be fed properly.

@operationsmile is an organization who works all around the world (this week in Ghana) helping unfortunate people with cleft, like Patricia, to make sure they not only live but will have a life and be accepted into their society. Many kids with cleft are being hidden away, severely bullied and isolated. Some mothers are even made to believe it’s their fault. Because of the stigma it makes it hard for parents to seek out for help.

@operationsmile is physically traveling the country to find these kids. And if Patricia is too malnourished to go through with the operation this time @operationsmile will provide her mother with education and food to get her weight up and follow her journey until she’s healthy enough to do it.
