I had an important package overnighted from LA> #boston But it didn’t arrive. So I set out to find it. On my way to the post office I ran into Jeffrey, an, as I would find out, intrepid @usps_service worker, fiercely dedicated to his job. I asked if he had it, since he was next to my hotel. “Do you know Skippy?” He asked. I said I did not. “I sort the mail and scan it, he delivers it. I’ll help you.” Jeffrey then walked me to the belly of the hotel, to the mail room. We knocked on the door, no Skippy. He called (and FaceTimed, a strong move), still no Skippy. He called his boss at the MAIN post office where my package was scanned in from that morning. His BOSS said it had gone out, “it is with Skippy.” Endeavoring to find Skippy, Jeffrey walked me to my hotel front desk. THEY called Skippy. Couldn’t find him on the security cameras, couldn’t get to him on cell. “Maybe Skippy is Dead?” I offered. “No, more likely he is in the basement with no service” someone answered. I preemptively thanked Jeffrey for his dedication, “what’s your motto again? Neither sleet nor snow?” And he said “that’s not really true. If it’s dangerous, I’m not delivering it. I don’t know who started that.” So now, 45 min into our search, 2 hotel workers and Jeffrey, we all stood around wondering how things went so wrong on a simple priority package. Was Skippy to blame? Had he let my envelope slip through the cracks? Jeffrey’s phone rang. It was his boss. Had he found Skippy? “Uh, I have her package. I found it after I told you it had gone out and I forgot to tell you.” In the end we never found Skippy. But, it didn’t matter. In some ways we are all searching for our “Skippy” you know? Then, in a final act of heroism, Jeffrey said “I’ll go get it for you.” And I said “oh, i can uber there, I don’t mind. Actually, can I go with you?” He said “no, you aren’t allowed in the truck. But I’ll go and bring it back and text you when I have it.” It was one thing to help me for that long but to stick with me and to go retrieve the package (and hopefully give his boss the side eye) I will never forget Jeffrey and his kindness. #RIPSkippy I love Boston.
