"Dark Crystal" puppets in our collection = creepy Halloween costume inspiration. Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, the 1982 fantasy movie was technically family-friendly but gave us way more nightmares than other Henson creations.

The first puppet head shown here belongs to one of the Skeksis, the rotting-on-the-inside, vulture-like villains. During filming, two puppeteers performed in each Skeksis, one with a hip harness and the other tucked inside the costume. A team of assistant puppeteers was needed to truly bring the creature to life. UrSol and UrSu, also shown here, are part of the peace-loving Mystic species on the planet Thra.
Made of foam and latex, these puppet heads also give our Preservation Services a scare. As it ages, natural rubber latex loses its flexibility and gets brittle. Our team is taking good care of these costumes to minimize stress on them and keep them stable.
