THIS was Frederick Douglass when he started The North Star in 1847. He was not old and gray. He was just 29 years old. For context, Kendrick Lamar is 31. J Cole is 33. I’m 39. He was a young visionary. And slavery was still fully underway.
And this is the point I need you to understand. He was a journalist. He was a CEO. He was an entrepreneur. We aren’t taught this. He raised startup funds. He built a business plan and distribution network. He hired a team of skilled employees. He ordered equipment. He rented an office space in Rochester. He decorated it. All of that. I don’t mean that figuratively. I’ve done the research. He literally did all of those things.
He believed in the power of well told stories, from our perspective, shared with clarity and urgency. And so he started The North Star.
