This is Choló. She’s 6 years old and was born with a cleft lip. Her aunt traveled 9 hours with her to reach MaeSot Hospital so she could get her free surgery from #OperationSmile this week. She’s a beautiful ray of sunshine smiling at anyone and everyone who comes near ☀️ As soon as we met she immediately became captivated by my long hair; I became captivated by her smile, the way her whole face lights up and you can’t help but smile along. We don’t speak the same language but we never needed a translator. That’s the wonderful thing about smiles- they’re the same in every language and we’re both pretty fluent ? I waited all day with her yesterday in the ward and then followed her into the operating waiting room where we nervously played. I stood impatiently outside the O.R. recovery room to see how she was doing after her surgery and reluctantly went back to the hotel last night to let her rest. As soon as we got to the hospital this morning I went to see how she was doing and even though I didn’t get a full smile from her, I’m smiling just knowing that her life has changed. Her already beautiful smile will be even more stunning and she will continue to make the world a brighter place thanks to Operation Smile. Joining these missions has been such a blessing for me. It’s difficult to fully describe the impact they have- seeing the families arrive on screening day, listening to their stories, giving the kids toys they never knew existed and watching them play, following them through surgery and the healing process.... we come to help others but honestly these patients are the ones helping me.
