Edward Hopper’s autobiographical ‘Two Comedians’ represents the culmination of the artist’s career. Dated to 1966, the autobiographical work depicts Hopper and his wife, Jo, taking a bow on stage before turning to walk into the unknown. While Jo was often used as an anonymous model and muse throughout Hopper’s oeuvre, he explicitly depicts her holding his hand in ‘Two Comedians’ to symbolize the significant role she played in his life and career. The work is further distinguished by its provenance, having once been in the collection of Frank & Barbara Sinatra.
