As I was finishing my book I AM IMAN I realized that the book was my story but also the story of the black model so I envisioned the idea of the famous Irving Penn photo of “The Twelve Most Photographed Models, New York 1947"

You see as black models we never had a historic group shot together and time was of essence as I was on a deadline and I decided to embark on this monumental photo shoot to gather my “tribe of beauties” and on top of it lock in and confirm an important photogrpaher to photograph and give it weight.

I locked in on Annie Leibovitz and after explaining the importance of this portrait beyond my book she agreed .. but only gave me one singular date! to gather all of my models in NYC.

I wrote to each of the models and expressed my desire for this portrait to be done and not just for me or them but future generations of black models… All the models in this double spread all showed up on that day fully aware of the importance of the day and supportive of me an each other and with the help of stylist @kithebrewster & a team of hair and makeup we created a portrait of Black Girl Magic that is one of my proudest achievement and a legacy that I leave behind in full celebration of us… and couldn’t have done it without all these models lifting me and each other up.

My tribe of beauties….. indeed!
