In 1946, Pablo Picasso rescued a small owl with an injured claw, naming it Ubu.⠀

‘We put him in the kitchen with the canaries, the pigeons, and the turtledoves,’ recalled Françoise Gilot, Picasso’s companion at the time. ‘We were very nice to him but he only glared at us.’⠀

Picasso felt a deep connection with owls, identifying with their nocturnal habits, predatory nature and powerful sight. The birds featured in many of his works and later inspired one of his most striking self-portraits.⠀
