Michael and I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial today. It was an experience that will stay with me for life.
A little history lesson: On August 6th, 1945, US airmen dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing 140,000 people. The Genbaku Dome was the only structure left standing in the area, and it’s been preserved in the state it was immediately after the bombing. Today it stands as a powerful reminder of the most destructive force ever created by mankind, but it also symbolizes the hope for world peace, and the ultimate elimination of all nuclear weapons. In 2016 Barack Obama gave a speech here, and said that we must define our nations not by our capacity to destroy, but by what we build. With all the terrible things happening in the world today, let’s all take a moment to remember how important it is to choose love and peace over hatred and violence.
