Figure skater and Olympian, John Curry was born #onthisday 1949. ⠀

When the German newspaper ‘Bild’ revealed the British figure skater John Curry’s homosexuality ahead of the World Championships in 1976 he was at the height of his fame. That February, Curry, an amateur competitor, had won the gold medal in the men’s singles category at the XII Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, impressing the judges with ballet-like posture and superb control.⠀

It was a rare British achievement in a sport that Curry had turned into an art. That same year he became World Champion and European Champion (the first man to take all three titles in one season), received an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.⠀

Curry spoke openly about his sexual orientation at a time when few public figures did. And later, while other AIDS-stricken celebrities kept their silence, Curry wrote movingly of his HIV status after being diagnosed with the virus in 1987, in the hope that others might learn from his experience. ‘One has to make the best of it,’ he wrote. He died of an AIDS-related heart attack at the age of 44.⠀
