Last weekend, we were invited to the Arts and Culture Event at the local elementary schoool here in Namibia. The kids perform traditional dances from their cultural group, and it is SO COOL. The excitement these kids have to share their culture and traditions is incredible, and so foreign to me. When I was a kid, my parents would proudly watch my school plays and clap and cheer (politely, at the end). Here, parents (and aunts, and friends, and whoever wants) will scream and holler for their kid as they perform. Scream, as in whoops that fill the room. Most likely a mom will run on stage, pick up her kid, swing them around in the air, and keep shouting with pride. It’s a privilege to see the joy and enthusiasm Namibian families experience when celebrating their heritage. And the dances are unreal. Like, how can such a small body move their shoulders like that?
