Major Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen (1878-1931) was a popular painter of portraits and the most prolific official war artist sent by Britain to the Western Front during World War I. There he produced drawings and paintings of soldiers, dead men and German prisoners of war, as well as generals and politicians.
