It is with absolute honour and gratitude that I participated in my hero, Gloria Steinem's show "Gloria: A Life" as host of the talking circle in Act II.
As a child, I was raised by a single mother, so from an early age, the elegance and power of women was a value that was instilled in me. With time and age, this belief and respect has only grown, especially amid a challenging political climate that is run by privileged white men.
While I've known about Gloria Steinem for decades, it wasn't until 2015 that I had the pleasure of meeting her at my dear friend Jennifer Hudson’s (@ジェニファー・ハドソン) broadway opening for "The Color Purple." Never in my life have I felt so speechless. Here I was, meeting the woman I most admire, who challenged and changed our country, creating modern history with grace, integrity and compassion.
A year and a half later, Gloria surprised me by attending our Spring 2018 runway show, which was her first fashion show ever in 82 years. Her presence was the greatest gift, beyond my wildest dreams. And having her in our front row really set the tone for the show, empowering all of our young models to walk with pride and dignity, giving them a newfound understanding for the power they possess.
Gloria is a hero, a heroine, and a modern day wonder woman. Her story is one of empathy, courage and vigour, and it needs to continue to be told, igniting the flames inside of all of us, inspiring our next generation to continue to take action. I am humbled and grateful to be able to share in this story tonight on the play's stage, and am even more fortunate to be able to call Gloria a mentor and a friend. Thank you for being the fearless and compassionate leader you are. xPG
