In the spirit of Thanksgiving, can I share a story with you? It’s a happy one ?️. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I called my friend’s mom (the teacher) and told her about my situation, she said, I’m coming to pick you up. I seriously thought I was going to stay with her for a few days and then go back home (unbeknown to me, that was the day I went into the system). I grabbed a few clothing items and shoes and put them in a garbage bag. My parents at that time were at work. The moment that my friend’s mom’s car pulled in, my parent’s van pulled in. I was so scared, I ran from the front door to my friend’s mom’s car. As I was running, I didn’t realize that my little brother was running right behind me. He had no idea what was going on. There was a lot of chaos and yelling, and he stood under our guava tree and saw the whole thing. I only know this because he told me this a few years ago. After the car drove away, he went and sat in the shower and cried. He was 9 years old. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I got into college, he found out that I went to UC Berkeley. He emailed every persons with the name Wendy Nguyen at Berkeley, and that email hit my account. The email said… My name is John and I’m looking for my sister Wendy. If you are her, please call me [his number]. At first, I thought it was a sick joke, because I didn’t tell anyone in college about my family situation. I ended up calling that number and it was the best decision of my life.

I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I’m thankful for my brother, for Colin, for the kitties, and for you. Thank you for giving me the space to share, for sharing your stories, and for being on this journey together. Happy Thanksgiving ?
