Photos by @iantehphotography | I spent several days capturing life on this well-to-do residential street renamed after the civil rights icon, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr, in Kolkata, India, for Nat Geo’s special issue on race last April. The first image of a vendor making drinks from sattu flour for his customers made the opening spread in the issue. Additional photos: a startled pigeon taking flight as a man walks by while on his phone, a young chai waiter smiling at me, the dappled shadows of leaves on the entrance of a street-lit yellow home, and finally, the plaque that explains the historical name change of the street to MLK Sarani. These are the myriad unfolding activities and scenes from day to the night. India’s native son Mahatma Gandhi, who led a peaceful resistance against British colonialism, was “the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change,” said Rev.
