The allure is not in just the final print but the trace of ink stuck in the tooth of the plate, the weight of stone, the sheen of copper, the flexibility of paper. The plate is often cleaned by running the press until the ink is sucked out and the image disappears: the results are referred to as “ghost prints”. - All of Piranesi’s copper plates are archived at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome. The institute was founded by the Pope in 1738 for the control and protection of images—which, prior to the invention of photography, were circulated entirely through the distribution of prints. - Sze’s "Split Stone (7:34)" opened yesterday at the Crypta Balbi, Museo Nazionale Romano, at Via delle Botteghe Oscure 31, Rome.
